Your First Dungeon Doesn't Have to Be Scary

The first time you queue into a dungeon via the Duty Finder, it's natural to feel nervous. You're playing with three other real people, and you don't want to let them down. The good news? FFXIV's community is exceptionally patient with newcomers, and the early dungeons are designed to teach you the basics gently. Here's what you need to know for each role.

The Basic Dungeon Structure

Almost every FFXIV dungeon follows the same pattern:

  1. Pull trash mobs → clear them → advance
  2. Reach a boss → fight the boss → continue
  3. Repeat for 2–3 bosses total
  4. Chest at the end with loot

Most dungeons have two or three boss encounters separated by corridors of regular enemies. Bosses are where the real mechanics happen, so stay alert when the music changes.

Playing Tank: Your Responsibilities

As a tank, you set the pace of the dungeon. Your core jobs are:

  • Pull enemies first — use a ranged attack or provoke to initiate combat.
  • Keep enemies' attention on you — use your AoE enmity abilities (like Overpower for Warriors) on groups.
  • Face bosses away from the party — many bosses have frontal cleave attacks that only you should eat.
  • Use your defensive cooldowns — don't save them for "when things get bad." Use them proactively.

Pro tip for new tanks: In early dungeons, you can "wall-to-wall pull" — grab every enemy in a corridor at once and let the healer and DPS AoE them down. This is faster and is considered standard practice.

Playing Healer: Your Responsibilities

Healers keep the party alive and contribute to DPS between heals. Key responsibilities:

  • Keep the tank topped up — your primary healing target is the tank, especially during big pulls.
  • Use regens and shields proactively — don't wait until the tank is at 10% HP to heal.
  • DPS when safe — throwing your damage spells when the tank is stable dramatically speeds up clears.
  • Resurrect fallen party members — yes, this uses your raise spell even mid-combat.

The biggest mistake new healers make is over-healing out of anxiety. Trust your tank, use your heals efficiently, and you'll have plenty of time to deal damage.

Playing DPS: Your Responsibilities

DPS players have the most straightforward role, but a few rules still apply:

  • Don't pull for the tank — wait for the tank to establish aggro before unleashing your hardest-hitting abilities.
  • Use your AoE on groups — single-target abilities on a crowd of six enemies is a major DPS loss.
  • Follow the tank's lead — attack the target the tank is on, especially early in a pull.
  • Interrupt when you can — some enemies have interruptible casts. Use your interrupt ability (like Interject or Head Graze) to stop them.

Universal Boss Fight Rules

Regardless of your role, these rules apply to every boss encounter:

  • Don't stand in the red stuff. Any AoE telegraph on the ground — get out of it immediately.
  • Stack markers mean stack together — if you see a party stack icon over someone's head, group up.
  • Spread markers mean spread apart — move away from other players to avoid sharing damage.
  • Look at the boss's animation — telegraphed swings, jumps, and gaze attacks are visible if you're watching.

Dungeon Etiquette

FFXIV dungeons move at a faster pace than many MMOs. A few etiquette points:

  • It's polite to say "hi" at the start and "gg" or "ty" at the end.
  • If you're new, say so — "Hey first time here, let me know if I mess up!" is always welcome.
  • Don't leave mid-dungeon unless it's an emergency.
  • Loot rolls: Need on gear your job can equip and you'll use. Greed on everything else.

You'll find that most groups are happy to guide a newcomer. The FFXIV community takes pride in being helpful — lean into that.
