Work Smarter in Eorzea

Final Fantasy XIV is packed with quality-of-life systems that can dramatically improve your experience — but many players never discover them. Whether you're a newcomer or a returning veteran, these tips will save you time, Gil, and frustration.

Interface & Navigation

1. Use /Assist to Target Enemies

Type /assist in chat (or bind it to a key) and your character will automatically target whatever the selected party member is attacking. This is invaluable for DPS players who want to focus on the right target without constantly looking for what the tank is hitting.

2. The Gear Set System

If you play multiple jobs on one character, save your gear as Gear Sets in the Armoury Chest interface. Switching jobs then automatically equips the right gear. You can even link Gear Sets to your hotbars so changing jobs swaps your hotbars simultaneously.

3. Sprint Is Free — Use It Always

Sprint (the ability that makes you run faster) has a cooldown but no cost. Many players forget to use it between pulls or while traversing zones. Bind it somewhere accessible and use it constantly — it adds up to significant time savings.

4. Mark Targets with Waymarks

You can place glowing markers on the ground using Waymarks (found in the Party menu). These are essential for communicating spread positions in raids but are also useful in regular dungeons for marking where to stack or spread. Learn this system early.

Leveling Efficiency

5. Eat Food for a Free EXP Buff

Any food item gives you a 3% EXP bonus (Well Fed buff) for 30 minutes, plus stat boosts. Even cheap vendor food counts. Always keep food active during serious leveling sessions — it's a free, permanent minor boost.

6. Unlock Hunting Log Early

The Hunting Log gives you bonus EXP for killing specific enemy types. It's available from your Grand Company and is one of the most efficient early-game EXP sources that players often overlook entirely.

7. The Road to 80 Buff

If you're playing on a preferred server or as a new player, check if you have the Road to 80 (or current equivalent) buff active — it doubles all EXP gained. This is a massive advantage that many players don't realize they have.

Economy & Inventory

8. Sell on the Market Board, Not to Vendors

Before vendoring any crafting material or gear, check the Market Board first. Items that seem worthless often sell for significant amounts to crafters. The five seconds it takes to check can save you from leaving Gil on the table.

9. Use the Glamour Dresser

The Glamour Dresser in inn rooms lets you store cosmetic appearances of gear without taking up inventory space. Apply them as "plates" for instant outfit swaps. This solves inventory clutter and lets you look great without sacrificing bag space.

10. Desynthesize Gear for Crafting Mats

Leveling Desynthesis (available to crafters) lets you break down gear into useful crafting materials. Rather than vendoring old gear, desynth it for materials that might be worth more than the vendor price.

Combat & Performance

11. Weave Overbuffed GCDs

FFXIV has two types of actions: GCDs (on the global cooldown) and oGCDs (off global cooldown). You can "weave" oGCD abilities between GCD casts without losing any GCD time. This is fundamental to advanced play and worth learning sooner rather than later.

12. Use Limit Break Strategically

The party Limit Break gauge is a shared resource. DPS Limit Breaks deal the most damage and should be saved for boss vulnerabilities. Healer Limit Breaks revive the whole party — save them for wipe-recovery situations. Don't just spam LB3 when it fills up.

13. Enable Positional Indicators

In Settings → Character, enable positional indicators on your target. This shows exactly where the enemy's "flank" and "rear" hitboxes are, which matters for Melee DPS jobs that deal bonus damage from specific positions.

Social & Miscellaneous

14. Use the Party Finder for Everything

The Party Finder isn't just for raids. Players post groups for hunts, FATEs, crafting help, exploration, and casual chatting. It's an underused social tool that can help you find like-minded players quickly.

15. Screenshot Mode (Group Pose / GPose)

Type /gpose or press the Group Pose button to enter a powerful screenshot/photo mode. You can apply visual filters, change the time of day, animate your character, and capture stunning screenshots. It's one of FFXIV's most beloved features for a reason.
